However, complication rates of CSF shunts range from 5% to 50%. Most common are shunt infections and mechanical failures; these may lead either to underdrainage (with re-emergence of hydrocephalus) or overdrainage (with intracranial hypotension and its potential complications, eg, subdural hematoma). 4 Misplacement and migration of shunt catheters may cause seizures, intracerebral haemorrhage, and/ or focal neurologic deficits, such as hemiparesis. 2 We report a case of hemichorea after CSF shunt placement, and review the literature on CSF shunt-related movement disorders.

متن کاملA Giant Abdominal Cerebrospinal Fluid Pseudocyst
Background and Aim: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) is the most commonly used procedure for treatment of hydrocephalus in children. Abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst is a rare complication but potentially fatal. The pathogenesis of this complication remains unclear. This complication should be considered during differential diagnosis of an abdominal mass. Our aim is to report how large ...
متن کاملPleural effusion from intrathoracic migration of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt catheter: pediatric case report and review of the literature
BACKGROUND Pleural effusion is a rare complication of ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting and its diagnosis is difficult in patients with neurological and consciousness impairment. CASE REPORT Herein we report the case of a child affected by Pfeiffer syndrome and hydrocephalus, shunted at the age of 3 months, who developed acute respiratory failure due to a right-sid...
متن کاملVentriculoperitoneal shunt and the need to remove a gallbladder: Time to definitely overcome the feeling that laparoscopic surgery is contraindicated
Since Baskin et al. reported the first documented case of failure of a laparoscopically-induced ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP) in 1998, the cerebrospinal fluid shunt has been generally considered a relative contraindication to laparoscopy. Although the literature is limited there is a small body of evidence indicating that it is safe to perform laparoscopic surgery on these patients with routi...
متن کاملA corny cause of cerebrospinal fluid ascites: A case report and review of literature
OBJECTIVE To report a rare cause of cerebrospinal fluid ascites. METHODS A 37-year-old female with history of intracranial hypertension and a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was referred to liver clinic for evaluation of newly developed ascites. RESULTS Initially, the cause of ascites was thought to be secondary to a liver etiology. However, this was excluded after a comprehensive evaluation in...
